Maxillaria variabilis (Variable Maxillaria Orchid)

The Maxillaria variabilis is a small but remarkable orchid species native to Central and South America, including Colombia. It typically grows at elevations between 500 and 2,000 meters, thriving in humid forests where it attaches to trees as an epiphyte.

As its name suggests, this orchid is known for its extraordinary variability in flower color and size. Its blossoms range from yellow, red, purple, to brownish tones, often appearing speckled or patterned, making each plant unique. Though small—measuring about 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter—the flowers produce a delicate fragrance that attracts pollinators.

Because of its adaptability and resilience, Maxillaria variabilis has become a favorite among orchid enthusiasts. In its natural environment, it contributes to biodiversity by supporting pollinators and adding bursts of color to Colombia’s rich floral landscape.
